Brachypodium Genome Sequenced

The International Brachypodium Initiative, today reported publication of the Brachypodium distachyon genome in the journal Nature 463, 763-768 (2010) . Brachypodium is an important member of the grass family of monocots. Among the grasses, genomes of rice, maize and sorghum are the other agronomically important crop plants that have been sequenced before. Based on the sequencing results its genome size is about 272Mb and has about 25,500 protein coding genes. The Genome information can be accessed from the online databases Brachybase and Gramene.
